CHS Campus View - February 1962
Dreary day for sure, but a great picture none-the-less.

The picture's perspective appears to be from a spot near Sollon's Furneral Home.

Never noticed before, comparing both pictures, the structure on the roof of the main building, in some form, appears to have survived these many years?

Must be fun, getting a look see at those Ducky Swan prints. What are you plans?

Is it possible to post the one of the Eaves? As you probably remember, it was a popular late night High School hang out, that is if you didn't have wheels.....But, oh boy, if you had a car, then instead of going to the Eaves you would be "stylin" out at the "Ranch" or the "Hitchin-Post" on 19.

Thank you, Jim for sharing!

I got a hundred or so photographs on loan this afternoon that Ducky Swan had taken. Many I already have, but there are a number of new ones to me. One is the only photo I have seen of the Eaves.

Attached is one of the high school campus. Pretty bleak. The date stamped on the back is Feb 15, 1962. Within a few years the buildings other than the log cabin were torn down and replaced by the Middle School buildings there now.

Many memories can come flooding back when you recall your experiences associated with Beedle's Alhambra and The Continental movie houses.

How about sharing a few of those treasured moments.

Can you remember how much a ticket cost, any of the Saturday Matinees' with those great Serials. That first date at the movie then going to George's afterwards.

Streetcar last day of operation, August 30, 1953

Attached is a Ducky Swan photo of a streetcar on the last day of operation, August 30, 1953. The streetcars tied up traffic, particularly when a store was getting a delivery and there was parking on the other side of the street, as in this picture. I believe the policeman was Charlie Susnak. I had a poor version of this picture that I used for
Reflections, but I'm tickled to get a glossy print to scan.

Gene Capozzi

Just returned from a little R&R in Palm Springs. While there, I met up with Gene Capozzi, who I had not seen in 48 years.

Gene had once again retired and moved to Palm Desert about 8 years ago from Orange County, CA. His two sons, one a commercial pilot and the other a local businessman also live in Palm Desert.

We had dinner at Arnold Palmer's restaurant in La Quinta and our friendship quickly picked up from where we left off 48 years ago. The conversation, the laughter, and the dinner all made for a great evening. I am so pleased we met and very proud to call him a friend.

Before we went to dinner Gene showed us a few pictures he had found from our past, the Senior Prom with his date and classmate Judy Weber I've attached. The others can be found in the picture albums found on the Canonsburg Friends Blog

Thank you Gene for Sharing

This is an old Canonsburg photo taken from a hill with a corn field below.

Can you tell me
1) where the photographer was standing
2) what the structures next to the corn field are
3) about when the picture was taken

You should get one right, but not easily as it's an unfamiliar view

East End Kids - Who are they

Who are these EastEnd Kids?

No its not Leo Gorcey, Huntz Hall or Louie Dombrowski or any of those Bowery Boys; nor are they members of Our Gang!

However, they are some of those famous Canonsburg's EastEnd kids such as Richie "Speedy" Terling, Betty Popovich, Fred Terling, Darlene Bell. I have asked Betty Popovich Bartok who provided the pictures to provide a "Whos Who" caption via the Comment feature found at the bottom of the post.

Isalys

Jim, sharing with you and our Blog a copy of Sulkowski's painting "Isalys Canonsburg -1959" and a 50's photograph of Isalys with the famous "art deco" building front. Isaly's store front ad in the photo, advertises chipped ham at .99 a pound. No mention of Klondikes or those Skyscaper Cones however.

Hope they make your power point presentation regarding historic Pike Street.

Bards was torn down to build a parking lot next to the municipal building. The Book & Bible store where I used to buy models and the bus station were on the far side of Bards.
I'm working on a chronology of Pike Street. It's not far along but it may help. It's attached but not for publication. There are likely to be errors.
I asked Jeff Engel, but he doesn't know Ron. Jeff's mother was Roc O'Connell's secretary and later secretary at the Canon-McMillan office. His aunt is Aggie Engel at SNPJ. He said there are a lot of Engels around and he doesn't know how they're related.

Jim, Based on the model year of the cars, I'd say they were stuck since the 40's. Was Bard's where Isaly's eventually moved to? Aaaah, that chipped ham was sure good.
Is Jeff Engel any relation to Ronnie Engel and can he be used to track Ronnie down?

They canceled school because of the snow that day. Looks like some cars have been stuck on Pike Street for a long time.
(Actually, the picture came from Jeff Engel and was taken by his uncle, Lloyd Rhys.)
